Always being the strong one.

Always Being the Strong One

What happens when being the person everyone relies on becomes part of who you are?

You might be the one people turn to when something goes wrong.

The one who stays calm.
The one who gets things organised.
The one who looks after everyone else.
The one who keeps going, even when things feel difficult.

Perhaps people describe you as strong, capable, dependable or resilient.

And maybe, for a long time, you have been proud of that.

But what happens when you don't feel strong?

What happens when you're exhausted, overwhelmed, sad or simply unsure what to do next?

Sometimes being “the strong one” can make it surprisingly difficult to let anyone see that side of you.

When strength becomes a role

Being capable isn't a problem. Being resilient isn't a problem either.

The difficulty can come when you begin to feel that you always have to be capable and resilient.

You may have become so used to managing things yourself that asking for help feels uncomfortable. You might minimise what you're going through because someone else seems to have bigger problems.

You might think:

“I'll be fine.”
“Other people need me.”
“I don't want to burden anyone.”
“I'll deal with it later.”
“I've got this.”

And then you keep going.

Until eventually, you realise that you haven't really stopped to ask yourself how you are.

The cost of always holding everything together

When you're constantly focused on managing life, there may be very little room left for your own feelings.

You can become good at functioning while struggling internally.

You go to work.
You look after your family.
You answer the messages.
You make the plans.
You keep the household moving.

From the outside, everything may look completely fine.

But underneath, you might feel tired, disconnected, resentful or overwhelmed.

Sometimes the strongest-looking person in the room is the person who most needs somewhere to put down what they've been carrying.

You don't always have to be the one who copes

There can be something quite vulnerable about allowing someone else to support you.

If you've spent years being independent, being needed or looking after others, receiving care can feel unfamiliar.

You may worry about losing control.

You may worry about appearing weak.

You may even feel guilty for needing anything at all.

But needing support doesn't erase your strength.

You don't become less capable because you have reached your limit.

You don't become a burden because you need someone to listen.

And you don't have to wait until you're completely overwhelmed before asking for help.

What if strength could look different?

Perhaps strength isn't always about carrying more.

Perhaps sometimes it is recognising when you've been carrying too much.

It might mean saying “I'm struggling” instead of automatically saying “I'm fine.”

It might mean allowing someone to help.

It might mean acknowledging feelings you've pushed aside because there was always something else that needed doing.

And sometimes, it might mean having a space where you don't have to be the strong one at all.

A space for you

Counselling can offer an opportunity to slow down and explore what life has been like beneath the role of being the person who always copes.

You don't need to arrive with everything worked out.

You don't need to know exactly what you need.

And you don't need to be falling apart to deserve support.

Sometimes, you simply need somewhere to put the weight down for a while.

The Balance Practice offers counselling and psychotherapy in Blackheath, London SE3, providing a confidential space to pause, reflect and explore what may be going on beneath the surface.

You can be strong and still need support.
